Pete ( AU 86 P 2304 BBC ) was entered in the Stoneham Club Auction Race by Pete Moyer, a new flyer from Wisconsin. When Moyer got interested in racing pigeons he decided to go to Europe and pick the birds he wanted to keep. The birds he ended up with were all imported from the loft of Leen Boer of the Netherlands. Moyer's opinion of the Boers were that they were a very beautiful and intelligent looking pigeon. Pete Moyer being a new flyer, didn't keep great breeding records and didn't know from which of his imported Leen Boer pairs Pete was bred by.
That year as a young bird, Pete didn't do very much. Like most of the participants of that year's Stoneham Club Auction Race he didn't return home in time to make the race report. With 75 lofts shipping 255 birds, only 63 made it home after the third day to be on the race report and deplete the prizes. When Pete finally made it home, he was in tough shape but, with tender loving care, he returned to good health. It's a good thing.
As the years progressed he proved himself to be a great Widowhood cock and a real Champion. In 1987 he was my first bird three times and in the clock nearly every time he was shipped. Pete also got better with age. His flying ability was sometimes overshadowed by his overwhelming urge to possess more than the one nest box he was allotted and his intelligence made it difficult to catch him in the act of terrorizing his yearling loft mates. Often times I would go into the loft and find two or three yearling cocks on the floor and he would be in his own box looking like the cat that ate the canary! Good thing for him he was my best widowhood cock for years! While on the flying team one could almost always know when he was ready for the weekend. He would be laying in his box on his side facing the back of the box. When you seen him like that you could bet the farm! 1988 was his peak year winning four diplomas. He continued winning diplomas until 1992. After winning a club race that year I decided to stock him.
While he was a widowhood cock I never raised a youngster off him. It just happened during his years of flying, for some reason or another, he never raised any youngsters of his own. In his first year in the stock loft mated to one of my Janssens hens, he raised AU 93 CAF 934 Red Check Cock. As a young bird 934 was 16th Greater Boston Concourse against 2575 birds and 2nd Greater Boston Concourse against 2319 birds ( missing 1st by only .001 of a yard ) and went on to win the Thoroughbred YB Ace Pigeon Award for 1501-2500 birds. As an Old Bird he continued to be a good flyer by earning another 2nd Greater Boston Concourse against 1202 birds and becoming AU Champion # 1055.
